Dental X-rays

Why do I need X-rays?

X-rays help your dentist find hidden problems that can effect your dental or general health. For this reason your dentist may periodically suggest that you have an X-ray examination.

Benefits of X-ray Examinations

By using X-rays, your dentist can discover dental problems early, before they have caused serious damage to your teeth, gums, and the supporting bone. If these conditions are not detected until you have visible signs of disease, your oral health or general health can be seriously affected.

X-rays can show:
  • early dental caries (tooth decay) between the teeth or under the gumline
  • bone loss caused by periodontal (gum) disease
  • teeth that are impacted, abscessed, or erupting abnormally
  • diseases and tumors of the jaw

The earlier dental problems are found, the earlier they can be treated. This saves time, money, and unnecessary discomfort. If you have an unseen tumor, X-rays may even save your life.

Safety of X-ray Examinations

You may have heard or read statements that question the safety of dental X-ray examinations. There is little reason for any patient to be concerned when modern methods and safeguards are used.

A number of modern techniques and materials have notably improved X-ray equipment and procedures. Dentist today can use.

  • high speed film
  • restricted X-ray beams
  • shielded open-ended cones
  • precise timers
  • lead apron and collars
